Why Thousands of Scholarships Go Unclaimed Every Year — Edutu Blog
The problem is rarely a lack of qualified applicants. Thousands of scholarships go unclaimed because talented young people never hear about them, find them too…
Every year, thousands of scholarships, fellowships, grants, internships, and leadership programmes close without reaching the people who need them most. It is easy to assume the problem is a lack of qualified applicants. In our experience, that is rarely true. The real problem is that many talented young people never hear about these opportunities. Others find them only after the deadline has passed. Some discover them on time but never apply because they believe they are not qualified. The same stories, again and again Over the years, we have spoken with students, graduates, entrepreneurs, and community leaders across Africa. We have heard the same stories repeatedly: "I wish I had known earlier." "I thought only students from top universities could apply." "I assumed my grades were not good enough." "Nobody shared this opportunity with me." These are not stories of laziness or lack of ambition. They are stories of missed access. Information is everywhere — and nowhere The internet has made information easier to publish, but not necessarily easier to find. Today, opportunities are spread across hundreds of websites, newsletters, social media pages, university portals, and mailing lists. Keeping up with everything has become almost impossible. Even when people find an opportunity, they often face another challenge. Application pages can be long and confusing. Requirements are written in technical language. Deadlines are buried deep inside pages. Many first-time applicants simply give up before they even begin. Every missed opportunity is a missed future This is why access to information matters. One scholarship can pay for an education. One fellowship can open international doors. One grant can help launch a business. One internship can become a lifelong career. Every missed opportunity is more than a missed application. It is a missed chance to change someone's future. At Edutu, we believe technology should make opportunities easier to discover, understand, and pursue. We are building tools that reduce information barriers so that talent — not access to information — determines who gets a chance. Because the next young leader, researcher, entrepreneur, or innovator should not miss their future simply because nobody shared a link. The opportunity already exists. Our mission is to help more people find it.
